Two old men try to live a little

I’ll give some hints after wrong guesses Hints: the main character has an unusual pet, sort of. The movie was distributed by New Line Cinema. Comics are a prominent part of the opening and closing scenes. These two men died at the end of the movie. It’s not a very well known movie, that I know of.
