what did i do wrong

so i’m trying to master that grappling game but i genuinely don’t get how it works because it’s says to pull the right trigger down and press R2, i do that and absolutely nothing happens, he beat the shit out of me, and for some reason i couldn’t even block it even though bots can always do that
